With a background in ceramics, sculpture and painting, Nan Smith has created a tangible sense of the contemplative within her figurative tableaus. Smith received her BFA from the Tyler School of Art and her MFA from The Ohio State University.
She has been awarded a National Endowment for the Arts regional award for Sculpture sponsored by the Southern Arts Federation, three Florida Individual Artists\\' Fellowships and residencies at the Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts. Smith was awarded The University of Florida Research Foundation Professorship in the College of Fine ArTs in 2000. Her work is in major collections in this country and abroad, including the WOCEK International Ceramics Collection housed at the Ichon Ceramics Center in Korea, the American Express/IDS Corporation in Minneapolis and the Lamar Dodd Center at the La Grange College.

Her figure sculpture and installations are featured in chapters in two books: "The Figure in Clay: Contemporary Sculpting Techniques by Master Artists", a Lark Publication, 2005, and World Famous Ceramic Artists\\' Studios, Volume of America (2), Hebei Fine Arts Publishing House, 2005. Her recent work was presented in a feature article titled "Nan Smith: Evoking Nostalgia" written by Glen R. Brown, PhD, in the June 2009 issue of Ceramics Montlhy magazine.
