East Africa, kanga, textiles, contemporary art

Research Biography:
MacKenzie Moon’s dissertation research is focused on the kanga, a colorful and graphic factory-produced, machine-printed textile worn by women as wrap garments throughout East Africa and beyond. Ms. Moon is currently researching the history of this textile, the product of local tastes and international ties. She is interested in the kanga’s communicative and expressive role within society, as well as their contemporary uses and transformations.
