Dr. Mihoko Tsutsumi is a native of Japan. She graduated from the Osaka College of Music as a voice performance major and studied opera at the Kansai Nikikai Opera Corporation in Osaka. In Japan, Dr. Tsutsumi studied under Shoichiro Tahara a multi–award winner of many prestigious opera competitions in Italy. As a disciple under Mr. Tahara, Dr. Tsutsumi accompanied all his students in piano as a payment for his vocal technique and piano training. Since then, she has developed piano and vocal technique that has taken her in front of audiences around the world. Prior to performing western operas, Dr. Tsutsumi actively performed in Japanese opera’s such as Buddha and Fujito no Ura. .As for her western works, she has performed in Giacomo Puccini’s Madame Butterfly and Ruggero Leoncavallo’s Pagliacciand has landed solo roles performing George Frederic Handel’s Messiah,Requiems and Masses.

            In 1989, Dr. Tsutsumi moved to Montreal, Canada and studied English and voice at McGill University for two years. She then relocated back to Japan in 1991 to teach voice, piano, chorus, and English until 1999. In 2000, Dr. Tsutsumi traveled overseas to the United States to receive her Master’s in Music Education at Columbus State University in Georgia. She then traveled to Florida in 2004 to complete her Master’s Degree in Choral Conducting at Florida State University; as well as her Ph.D. in Music Education with an emphasis in Choral Conducting.

            After obtaining her Ph.D. in summer of 2007 at Florida State University, Dr. Tsutsumi joined the faculty of the University of Florida as the director of the Men’s Glee and Women’s Chorale; as well as teaching conducting.She has been a faculty advisor of the UF Gospel Choir since 2010. Dr. Tsutsumi is also a conductor of the Chancel Choir and Orchestra at the Trinity United Methodist Church of Gainesville; as well as being an active pianist and accompanist in Choirs such as McGill Choral Society, Tallahassee Civic Choir, and FSU Chamber Choir.
