Costume Technology

This program is designed to develop the skills, communication, and creative thinking required for costumers who intend to work at the highest levels in the profession. Students gain experience through hands-on training and work as part of a team on a variety of realized theatre and dance productions.

The MFA program requires seven semesters of training. Five semesters of course work must be taken at the University of Florida. One summer session may be fulfilled at the University of Florida, or through participation in a professional summer stock. Students are required to gain further professional experience through a one-semester internship.

The costume technology program includes study in costume design, history, and literature to provide strong foundation for effective communication and teamwork. Pattern making, crafts, and dyeing are learned through the creation of realized projects. Students may focus on a particular area of concentration such as crafts, draping, computer pattern- making, or dyeing.

The assistantship is a crucial element in the costume technology MFA. It not only provides students with a means to live during their training, but also provides an opportunity for students to increase skill level, speed, and quality of work. Assistantship assignments vary according to skill level, and individual goals.

In addition to classroom training and assistantship work, students are required to fulfill a position of responsibility on a School of Theatre and Dance production each semester. Such positions are assigned according to the needs of the production season and the individual goals of the student. Students must fulfill the assigned duties in a satisfactory manner to remain in good standing in the program.
