The Music Minor

The University of Florida School of Music offers a minor in music for students with prior music study. The music minor includes performance study, ensemble participation, and a limited amount of music theory and history course work. Nineteen credits will complete the minor, though additional study may be elected.

Century Tower In the saxophone studio, the typical music minor willl have performed in high school bands, and taken some private saxophone lessons. Several of our music minors have performed in the Florida All-State Bands. However, students at many levels are accepted into the music minor program.

Audition Scheduling: An audition is required to become a music minor. Saxophone auditions may be scheduled at any time by contacting Dr. Helton.

Audition Requirements: The audition will consist of:

  1. Scales: All major scales and a full-range chromatic scale.
  2. Sight-Reading
  3. Two prepared pieces of your choosing. One should be slow and lyrical in order to demonstrate your tone and musical sensitivity. The other piece should be fast in order to demonstrate your technical command of the saxophone. You may choose any combination of solo works and/or etudes. Perform music with which you feel comfortable.
