The Oral Exam
Near the end of the second year of study, graduate students will take a comprehensive oral exam. This exam is given by the supervisory committee. Subjects included in this exam can be drawn from any undergradute or graduate coursework you have taken in music (theory, history, orchestration, etc.), and from additional areas suggested by your committee (history of your instrument, pedagogy, acoustics, artist/composer works, biographies, bibliography, etc.).
The oral exam must take place after your final recital. You are responsible for arranging a time and location for this exam to take place. All members of the Supervisory Committee must be present.
It is recommended that you confer with your supervisory committee members to understand the subject areas and scope of the oral exam. You will need to study for this exam. You must pass in order to graduate.
More information on the oral exam can be found in the School of Music Graduate Handbook.
The study guide for the saxophone subject-specific portion of the oral exam is provided here: http://www.arts.ufl.edu/music/saxophone/docs/oralsstudyguide.pdf. Be sure to check with the other members of your supervisory committee for more detail on music history and theory content.
